BACKGROUND and OBJECTIVES of The America Team for Displaced Eritreans
|
Beginning in 2004, a small group of Americans and Eritreans living in America began
advocacy efforts to create awareness among governmental and independent
groups, of the plight of Eritreans, at the hands of the regime that took control of
Eritrea following independence from Ethiopia in the early 1990s. Fostering unity and
harmony of the political opposition was another activity. The group was known as
The America Team for Freedom for Eritrea. In 2008, the group expanded its activities
to assist refugees that had fled the Eritrean regime, particularly those that had been
living in a large refugee camp located in Ethiopia, called Shimelba Camp.
In March of 2010, the group ceased its political objectives and activities and focused
its efforts solely on assisting Eritrean refugees, particularly those living in Ethiopia,
and those being resettled from Shimelba Camp to the USA by the United States
Department of State.
